Welcoming New Southern Region Director Robert Burnside

Robert Burnside, Sr. is founder of Compassion Outreach of America, a faith-based non-profit headquartered in New Orleans. He is an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God and serves on the executive team of the Greater New Orleans Pastors Coalition. Pastor Burnside has over twenty years of experience in church planting, urban ministry, and community organizing. Pastor Burnside is an innovator in the area of community transformation. He has been heavily involved in violence reduction, youth and adult education, entrepreneurship training, drug abuse, and death row inmate counseling, blight reduction, and other Christian community development initiatives. He enjoys speaking at local and national conferences, facilitating community engagement workshops, participating in foreign and domestic mission trips. Pastor Burnside has served in leadership at urban church plants in Harvey, LA; Oakland, CA; and New Orleans, LA. Most recently he served as lead pastor of Journey Ninth Ward Assembly of God in post-hurricane Katrina New Orleans for eight years. He launched Crescent Dads, a collaborative initiative of New Orleans Healthy Start, NOLA for Life, and the Children’s Bureau, which helps men become healthier, more engaged fathers. He also leads one of the city’s most effective murder reduction initiatives, the “Stop Killing People” project, which resulted in a 71% neighborhood murder reduction rate. These experiences codified his expertise in community transformation. Robert and his wife Sherdren have been married for 22 years. Pastor Burnside has four adult children: Tyesha, Narayan, Robert, Jr., Alexis, and one teenage daughter, Bethany. He is deeply committed to seeing people reconciled to God and communities holistically restored.  He is called to encourage people to become worshipers of God, winners because of God, and witnesses for God. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
